New Member Orientation
1.01 INTRODUCTION
It is the intent of the S.O.G. to establish guidelines, by which all new
members of the BVFD will conduct themselves as members, firefighters.
1.02 ISSUING OF SOG’S
• SOG’S will be issued to each member and should study the subject matter… to
become familiar with SOG’S of the Brazoria Fire Department.
Proposal Change
• SOG’S will be issued to each new member upon acceptance of application
for probationary term. Probationary member shall read, understand and abide by
The Brazoria Fire Department. The new – probationary member shall sign and
return the “Agreement” page within 14 days of receipt. And agree to comply with
the entire Brazoria Fire Department standard operating guidelines, at which time
he/she shall become a probationary member for a term no less than 90 days and no
more than one year.
1.03 MEETINGS
• There are 2 drills held each month, on the first and third Thursday of each
month. Each member is required to attend.
• There are 2-business meetings held each month on the second and fourth
Thursday of each month. Each member is required to attend.
• No business will be conducted unless majority of membership is present.
• The Fire Chief may call a special meeting of the members if needed or six
members may call for a special meeting.
• Drills and business meetings will start at 7:00 p.m. sharp.
• If members are more than 15 minutes late they will not receive credit for
drill.
• The only acceptable reasons for missing meetings are as follows:
1. Illness or death in the immediate family.
2. Work schedule
3. Vacation
4. Attending school
5. Out of town
6. Personal Business
1.04 REQUIRED RESPONSE
As a member of the BFD you are required to respond to all calls for assistance
whether they are for fire, rescue, or any other reason whenever you are
available.
Members are required to respond to a minimum of 25% of all calls received
and a minimum of 40% of the meetings in a calendar year to maintain membership
in the BVFD. Any member not maintaining the required
percentage of calls and meetings will automatically be expelled.
1.05 PHYSICAL HEALTH AND LIMITATIONS
Any or all of the following means can obtain credit for members with health
or physical limitations.
• Attendance at any function approved in advance by the chief.
• Conducting community tours of the fire stations.
• Servicing fire department equipment and apparatus.
1.06 EQUIPMENT ISSUE
Upon entry into the BVFD you will be issued each of the following:
1. NFPA Firefighters helmet.
2. NFPA Firefighters bunker coat.
3. NFPA Firefighters bunker pants.
4. NFPA Firefighters bunker boots.
5. NFPA Firefighters gloves.
6. NFPA Firefighters protective hood.
7. Department pager w/charger.
8. Department picture Identification card will be given after probationary
period is over.
9. Brass accountability tags
Upon successful completion of your probation period you will be issued each
of the following:
1. One uniform size-badge.
2. Any other equipment that becomes standard issue.
1.07 EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE (P.P.E.)
It is the responsibility of each member to properly maintain in good working
order each of the components of the issued equipment.
Should a problem arise with any of the issued equipment that the member cannot
correct it must be brought to the attention of the
Quartermaster for repair or replacement.
1.08 EXPULSIONS
No active member shall be absent without excuse more than seven drills and
meetings in one calendar year.
No active member shall be absent without excuse more than three consecutive
drills and meetings.
Being absent more times than is provided in above section without legal excuse
will automatically expel the member.
It is the responsibilities of each member to contact the chief when absent from
meetings or drills. Contact should be made before the scheduled meeting.
1.09 SAFETY
It is the responsibility of each member of the BFVD to practice and promote
safety at all times.
All safety practices listed in the General Safety S.O.G. shall be observed at
all times whether enroute to station, at the station, enroute to an
emergency scene, or returning to the station.
1.10 NEW MEMBERS ORIENTATION
All responses to any Fire call will be made from the fire station, with all
firefighters reporting directly to the station.
The Fire Chief and any other designated officers can respond directly to the
scene to establish command operations.
1.11 DRIVING
It is the Policy of the BVFD to safely respond to all emergencies.
The details of our driving policy are explained in the Driving S.O.G’s.
For the purpose of this document the following guidelines will be observed:
1. Until probation is successfully completed, response in personal vehicles will
be without lights and siren, and all traffic laws will be abided by.
2. You will not drive any emergency apparatus until training is completed and
you receive clearance from your Company Captain.
3. The maximum speed to be driven by any member of the BVFD shall be limited to
TEN miles over the posted speed limit inside the city limits, so long as they do
not endanger life or property.
4. The maximum speed to be driven by any member of the BVFD shall be limited to
TEN miles over the posted speed limit in a rural or residential area.
5. The Tanker is not to exceed the Maximum posted speed limit any time for any
reason.
6. School Zone speeds are not to be exceeded at any time for any reason. Traffic
laws that apply to school buses must be obeyed at all times regardless of
emergency traffic.
7. You may contact any member of the department who has a class B exempt drivers
license and approval to operate the apparatus for assistance with practice runs
and to gain familiarity with the equipment.
8. No smoking in fire department apparatus
9. Safety belts shall be worn at all times while on fire department business
(i.e., calls, schools, etc.). Failure to comply constitutes disorderly conduct
punishable in accordance to Constitution and by-law’s Article X11 BVFD.
1.12 RESPONSE CODES
The response codes and their meanings are as follows:
1. CODE ONE : No lights or sirens, no speed limit violations, observe all
traffic regulations as if there were no emergency.
2. CODE THREE : Lights and sirens, used to clear traffic, proceed cautiously
at all times, never run stop signs, or red lights without slowing or stopping
and checking all traffic flow.
Laws in the State of Texas require that you are as responsible for your actions
in an Emergency Vehicle as you are in your personal vehicle.
LIGHTS AND SIRENS DO NOT GIVE YOU THE RIGHT OF WAY. THEY ONLY ASK FOR IT!
1.13 EMERGENCY APPARATUS
It shall be the responsibility of each member to learn the proper operation of
each of the emergency apparatus, the location of the tools and equipment on each
apparatus, and the proper use of the tools and equipment. Before the end of
probation term and /or when new equipment is acquired.
